Marine biologists in Australia say they’re baffled by the lack of information on the safety of boats heading out to sea.
One of them, Andrew Hutton, told ABC Radio Perth that when he and colleagues were stuck on the Mina on the way to the Gulf of Mexico they were told that there was nothing wrong with the ship.
“But then I was told that they had been found with a lot of dead animals,” he said.
Hutton says he believes that a lack of basic information about marine life is a contributing factor to this.
“We are trying to do what we can to help educate people on the issue of marine life and I don’t think we have a lot more information out there than we do on the topic,” he told ABC Perth.
Huttons colleagues have also encountered the same problems.
“The general consensus among the colleagues is that there’s a lack and they are very frustrated with the lack,” he explained.
“They’re frustrated with not being able to tell the people what to look for and they’re frustrated because they have to deal with people who don’t have the information.”
This is a problem not just for scientists, but also for those travelling on vessels.
“We’re stuck with them,” said the Queensland University of Technology’s Dr John Coyle.
“It’s not a question of a lack, it’s a question whether they’re aware of what we’re doing.”
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
According to Dr Coyle, a lack is also reflected in a lack in information on what to expect from marine life.
“There are no guidelines for when you should expect to see dead animals, dead fish, dead whales, dead turtles, dead molluscs, dead crustaceans, dead sharks, dead snails, dead sea turtles, or dead seabirds,” he noted.
The lack of guidance on the potential dangers of this “is one of the major reasons why we are seeing the decline of marine science in Australia,” Dr Coyne added.
“People are doing it on their own, they’re not having an informed debate about what’s safe, and we have the wrong information to go with it.”
It’s not just marine biologists who are struggling to get information on marine life, there are also people who are looking to buy or sell marine products.
Dr Collyon told ABC News Australia that this was a major concern for marine scientists who were hoping to sell their products.
“If you’re a marine biologist and you sell products to people, you’re not getting all of the information on how to safely and humanely harvest these products,” he warned.
He explained that when a product is sold on the internet, it can easily be misinterpreted as being a safe and appropriate product. “
That’s where the real issue lies.”

“One of the things that happens when we’re dealing with the internet is we can get a lot into the weeds about things,” he added.
Hurdles faced by marine scientists: ‘We’re going to be in a crisis’ There is also a lack a lack on the part of the authorities.
“When you’re talking to local authorities, they’ve got a very, very small budget to be able to respond to this issue,” said Dr C Boyle.
There is a shortage of scientists and scientists working on the problem, and they need more resources to get the information out to the public. “
I think we’re going at a very slow pace to getting the information we need to understand what’s going on, but we’ll be in crisis.”
There is a shortage of scientists and scientists working on the problem, and they need more resources to get the information out to the public.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said that in recent years it had received over $20 million worth of marine products to help the industry address the issue.
“A lot of these products have been developed and produced by the industry and there is a need for more and more marine science experts to be involved in the industry to make sure that we can solve this,” said a spokesperson.
“This is why we have recently created a new marine science training program and we are providing marine scientists with a further year of funding to help them develop and improve their skills and to support and support other marine scientists.”
The spokesperson went on to say that there were already more than 4,000 marine scientists working in Australia, and there were plans to increase that number.
“However, we have made some commitments in the past year to increase the number of marine scientists by 25 per cent, and our marine science program has a high level of training and expertise and we need more experts to take part in the marine science industry,” they added.
It’s a problem that’s only going to get worse.
